In September 2017, the not-for-profit Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) together with the Iranian Mirmiran Architecture Foundation (MAF) organized a workshop entitled Tehran City Garden. The design brief was for a 270 hectare open area in the heart of the metropolis, which has not been used since the closure of the former Ghale Morghi Airport and which is part of the masterplan proposed by gmp for this airport site in Tehran. This masterplan envisages a park in the style of a Persian garden for all citizens of Tehran. In detail, the 20 German and Iranian scholarship students were tasked with the design of a culture center on part of the site.

In preparation for the workshop, a six-day excursion to Iran was organized during which the participants could gain an impression of the best examples of recent and historic Persian architecture. Both traditional and modern buildings were visited in Tehran and Isfahan. In the weeks following their return to the aac studios at the Rainvilleterrasse campus in Hamburg, the students created the designs shown in the exhibition under the guidance of Prof. Dr.-Ing. h. c. Volkwin Marg and Dipl.-Ing. Hubert Nienhoff.
